♬Liner Notes♬: The little music show that could continues with some of the best new sounds around. This week rocks some Wavves, Thermals, Virgins, more music from Villagers and Black Angels plus much more... Let's Pump Up Tha Volume!

Bombino
"Amidinine"
'Nomad'
Nonesuch, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says, "Tuareg guitarist Bombino teams up with celebrated musician-turned-producer Dan Auerbach (of Black Keys fame) for a gorgeous new album, Nomad, slinging incredible riffs with a stellar backing band." The LA Times has a lengthy piece, as well. What a way to start the episode!

Kurt Vile
"Never Run Away"
'Wakin On A Pretty Daze'
Matador, 2013
Note: Pretty Much Amazing says, "Whether you are bored or transfixed by the album, however, will be entirely dependent on your mood upon listening. Vile has crafted 70 minutes that are perfect for a specific atmosphere of reflection and introspection. There will undoubtedly be those who will play this record in its entirety on long, solo road trips, or relaxing Sunday afternoons spent lounging around the house, and it will work perfectly as a complete entity."

Villagers
"My Lighthouse"
'{Awayland}'
Domino, 2013
Note: For the second week in a row we get new music from the buzz-building band from Ireland. In its 100% rating review, the UK Independent gushes that "{Awayland} sounds like a band, one keenly engaged in creating their own musical road as they walk upon it. Whether it's buffing the Bon Iver-esque sheen of "My Lighthouse" with sleek harmonies... these songs fizz with the excitement of creation."
(More Info)

Wavves
"Demon To Lean On"
'Afraid Of Heights'
Mom + Pop, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says this track "is one of the funnest offerings of this set, and it showcases the painful paradox of growing up more viscerally than most. Read the lyrics apart from the music and you’ve go a shade darker than most goth tunes."
(More Info)

Black Angels
"Don't Play With Guns"
'Indigo Meadow'
Blue Horizon, 2013
Note: Last heard on Episode051, KEXP says, "Austin’s The Black Angels craft thick, psychedelic rock burners that incorporate both the musky heat and the garage-sensibilities of their hometown... “Don’t Play With Guns” shows that The Black Angels have another mode besides “heady”, and when they pull out their garage rock roar, the result is even more sinister than the war-themed narratives of their early work."
(More Info)

Lonely Wild
"Closer Than The Needle"
'The Sun as It Comes'
Ursa Major, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says, "The sound of LA-based quintet The Lonely Wild lies somewhere between Radiohead and Fleet Foxes. Delicate harmonies, acoustic instruments, haunting textures converge..." Meanwhile, Sputnik Music says "It feels kind of refreshing to, for once, toss out the sluggish stereotypes that come with genre and just find a really good album. The Sun as it Comes is a really good album."
(More Info)

Owiny Sigoma Band
"Norbat Okelo"
'Power Punch'
Brownswood, 2013
Note: "Blending traditional African beats with Western production, Owiny Sigoma Band provide mind-boggling percussion," song source KCRW says.
(More Info)

Mary Onettes
"Can't Stop The Aching"
'Hit the Waves'
Labrador, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says this Swedish band can "strike the balance between gorgeous and gloomy. Counter to the song’s lyrics (“you will look away / because your heart’s going black”), the light pop melodies are comparative confection. If you long for The Cure’s sweet melancholy, then you’ll be aching for this song as well."
(More Info)

Chalet
"All Our Friends"
'Tucson'
self-released, 2013
Note: Song source The Current says, "Joey Kantor is ready to become a frontman with his new project, Chalet. You may know him as the piano/keys virtuoso around town, most notably in Rogue Valley."
(More Info)

Virgins
"Wheel Of Fortune"
'Strike Gently'
Cult/Frenchkiss, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says, "New York-based band The Virgins struck a chord with The Strokes' front-man Julian Casablancas, who signed them to his label and was overheard saying "I think they've made a classic record."" Meanwhile, Consequence Of Sound says, “Wheel of Fortune” straddles a curious line between “Boys of Summer” and surf rock revivalism...
(More Info)

The Thermals
"The Sunset"
'Desperate Ground'
Saddle Creek, 2013
Note: "Desperate Ground is the sixth album (and the first to be released on Omaha's Saddle Creek) from Portland's The Thermals. The album was produced by John Agnello whose previous credits include Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, and the Hold Steady. The band describes the album as "a cross between two of our best-known and -loved records, More Parts Per Million and The Body, The Blood, The Machine. It's loud, fast, incredibly scary and undeniably catchy."" As always, we close with a Pacific Northwest band and it's Portland's beloved trio The Thermals. It's funny, as I've been streaming Coachella this weekend it reminds me: I met Kathy the bass player at my old grocery store job where, ironically, I met waay more rock stars then I do at my new radio station job. It was the Monday morning after last year's Coachella and we chatted about the Tupac hologram. Dig it.
