♬Liner Notes♬: Welcome back to another world-class round of new sounds from Ben Harper, Devotchka, Jim Ruiz Set, Kate Nash and much more... Stay warm and Pump Up Tha Volume!

Free Energy
"Hangin' On"
'Love Sign'
Free People, 2013
Note: Stereogum says "Next week, the ferociously catchy and efficient Philadelphia power-poppers Free Energy will self-release Love Sign, their insanely fun sophomore album... Love Sign is out 1/15 on the band’s own Free People label."

Atlas Genius
"If So" (Live On KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic)
'When It Was Now'
Warner Bros., 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says "Aussie indie pop band Atlas Genius have captured our attention with an EP of incredible pop songs. As we anxiously await their full length debut, When It Was Now, we'd like to offer a live track of "If So" from their recent visit to Morning Becomes Eclectic..." Meanwhile, Glide Magazine says "When It Was Now, the debut album from Atlas Genius, will be released on February 19, 2013 via Warner Bros. Records. The Australian band has been touring the U.S. non-stop for the past four months with groups like Silversun Pickups, Wolf Gang and Animal Kingdom...

Kate Nash
"Death Proof"
'Death Proof' EP
Have 10P Records, 2012
Note: Spin says "Though "Death Proof," Nash says, is a song "metaphorically about heartache," it's also about a heart procedure Nash underwent ("part of my heart was actually burnt off because of a heart condition I had growing up") when she was 17, trauma she was sure to have represented visually here. Like all of the songwork to be found on Girl Talk and the Death Proof EP (both due via her own Have 10p Records, and both available to pre-order now through Pledge Music), it finds Nash embracing an entirely new mode, her piano having been replaced for the time being by a bass guitar."
(More Info)

Devotchka
"The Alley"
'Live with the Colorado Symphony'
Cicero, 2012
Note: On Episode037, we heard the final track from the new live album; this week we'll hear the lead cut - and The Denver Post says about their hometown band: "On "The Alley," the first and most beautiful song on DeVotchKa's 2011 release "100 Lovers," the sweep comes in the form of a four leaf clover: orchestral strings, piano keys bouncing like rain drops, Urata's operatic croon and drummer Shawn King's syncopated, fading shuffle beat."
(More Info)

The Carousels
"Marianne"
'Sweet Northern Light'
Northern Star, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says "Formed in Keith, Scotland in 2010, The Carousels create folk pop music indebted to the late ’60s outfitted with lush modern production. Despite operating more like a collective than a band, the songs on their debut album Sweet Northern Light carry a bright, cohesive sound all the way through the album’s eight tracks. “Marianne’s” bright tone carries on the hallmarks of the late ’60s folk pop movement."
(More Info)

The Growlers
"One Million Lovers"
'Hung at Heart'
Everloving, 2013
Note: The band's press release says "The Growlers are back with a new album of sunburned, psychedelic beach goth! Since 2010's Hot Tropics, the band has toured relentlessly, including Coachella, Lollapalooza, and even Rock In Rio but they continue to stay true to their roots with a distinctly DIY approach."
(More Info)

Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite
"You Found Another Lover"
'Get Up!'
Stax, 2013
Note: Again, the official press release says "Ben Harper has teamed with renowned harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite to create Get Up!, a piercing song-cycle of struggle and heart, slated for release by Stax Records/Concord Music Group on January 29th, 2013. Recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Harper, Get Up!, is his 12th studio album and first new recording since 2011's Give Till It's Gone... A striking mix of blues, gospel, roots and R&B, Get Up! features ten vivid musical character studies, skillfully rendered in cinematic detail, all written or co-written by Harper. "
(More Info)

Cayucas
"Cayucos" single
Secretly Canadian, 2012
Note: The band's label says "Timeless and seriously addictive, the title track "Cayucos" gives a nod to 60's beach blanket pop gems and bonfire folk songs, but with sharp, modern bottom end that cuts right through the breeze... Just a hint of the party that's still to come with a full-length in 2013..."
(More Info)

Ruby Suns
"Kingfisher Call Me"
'Christopher'
Sub Pop, 2013
Note: Pitchfork says "The Ruby Suns' 2008 breakthrough, Sea Lion, was a lovely array of island-hopping indie-pop, whereas 2010's Fight Softly aimed for something darker and ended up muddled. On "Kingfisher Call Me," the first single from their upcoming LP Christopher, they once again morph into a new, sleeker, more silvery form. The song's every bit as radiant and major-key melodic as their past work, but there's a greater emphasis on emotionally legible lyrics."
(More Info)

Robert DeLong
"Happy"
'Just Movement'
self-released, 2011
Note: Song source KCRW says "Robert DeLong throws a futuristic dance party on Just Movement, his debut full length release. Today's Top Tune, "Happy," stays true to its name and is sure to get you on your feet."
(More Info)

The Babies
"Get Lost"
'Our House On The Hill'
Woodsist, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says "The Babies are the musical spawn of two already thriving underground Brooklyn bands: Vivian Girls and Woods... Our House On The Hill single “Get Lost” should give you just enough of a glimpse to want more of The Babies. It’s a big, loud, chorusey Americana jam tune."
(More Info)

Jim Ruiz Set
"Allison"
'Mount Curve Avenue'
Mystery Lawn/Korda, 2012
Note: "Legendary Minneapolis resident Jim Ruiz hasn't released an album since 1998's Sniff but but that has now changed with Mount Curve Avenue, which marks the debut of his new combo The Jim Ruiz Set. Like his classic 1995 LP O Brother Where Art Thou? and Sniff, the new album, produced by The Orange Peels' Alan Clapp, owes much to '60s pop and jazz, and '80s UK acts like Everything But the Girl, The Monochrome Set and The Jazz Butcher (whose Max Eider plays a stellar solo on "Neo Acoustic Ambassador"). All of which is filtered through Ruiz's funny, romantic, world-weary lyrics. It's a charmer of an album and an extremely welcome return."
(More Info)

Stephanie
"Blinding Light"
'One Glove'
Couple Skate, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says about this Seattle band "“Blinding Light” is the bell ringer of the One Glove collection. It’s here we see the band’s energy most in sync and most directional. The volume is maxed out all the way through the track. Drums are pummelling, dual guitars are both set ablaze, and Adams’ voice grows only more impassioned and pained as the tune goes along."
(More Info)

Leagues
"Walking Backwards"
'You Belong Here'
Bufalatone, 2013
Note: In their own words, Nashville's Leagues have this to say about their upcoming album: "The whole spirit of You Below Here really resonates with us. It's a phrase that gets tossed around without much thought, but if you take a moment and think about it, it can hold a lot of comfort and depth. Like walking into a party and everyone is genuinely glad you are there. It's the celebration of togetherness, really."
